November is a time for gathering and reflection, a season when the comforts of home feel most profound. As a professional aromatherapist, I am continually fascinated by the powerful connection between scent, memory, and emotion. Our sense of smell is directly linked to the limbic system of the brain, the seat of emotion and memory. This is why a specific aroma can instantly transport us back in time or shift the energy of a room.

By harnessing the therapeutic properties of pure essential oils, we can consciously create a Thanksgiving atmosphere that is not only warm and inviting but also emotionally supportive for everyone in the family—from children to seniors.

Essential Oils for a Grateful Gathering

Sweet Orange (Citrus sinensis): This bright, cheerful oil is known for its uplifting properties that can ease anxious feelings and promote a sense of joy.

Cedarwood (Cedrus atlas): With its warm, woody scent, Cedarwood has grounding properties that promote feelings of stability and calm during the holiday bustle.

Cinnamon Leaf (Cinnamomum zeylanicum): A classic scent of the season, the leaf oil is gentler than bark oil. It offers a feeling of warmth and comfort, but should be used sparingly in blends.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale): This spicy and stimulating oil helps create a cozy, welcoming feeling. Aromatically, it is also noted for its ability to ease digestive discomfort after a large meal.

Clove (Syzygium aromaticum): A powerful and familiar holiday spice, Clove Bud oil is deeply warming and comforting. It is very potent and should be used in very small amounts.

Before the meal begins or after the day has wound down, take five minutes for yourself. Diffuse the "Peaceful Gathering" blend and find a comfortable, quiet space to sit. Thoughtful aromatic preparation can transform your home into a sanctuary of peace and gratitude this Thanksgiving. May your holiday be filled with warmth and well-being.

  1. Close your eyes and take a slow, deep breath in, imagining the air is filled with warmth and golden light.

  2. As you exhale, release any tension, stress, or hurry from your body.

  3. Breathe in again, and silently say to yourself, “I am loved.” Feel that love filling you up.

  4. Breathe out, and silently say, “I am grateful.” Picture one thing, person, or memory you are thankful for.

  5. Continue this pattern for a few minutes. Inhale “I am blessed,” exhale “I am thankful.”

  6. Allow the calming aroma to ground you in this present moment. Let the feelings of love, peace, and gratitude settle over you like a warm blanket.
