The Insulation That Changed How My Home Feels

Every year, the summer humidity hits me like a brick. I know it's coming, but I'm still always surprised by how uncomfortable it feels. The sticky air seems to follow me everywhere - outside on my bike, in the car, and usually right into my house.

But last year we built a new house, and like magic, the humidity no longer lingers inside my door, waiting to engulf me when I get home. Instead, the house feels noticeably cooler and drier than the air outside.


But of course, it’s not magic, and it's not because we're running air conditioning around the clock. In fact, we haven't even turned on our mini-splits this summer. Yet the house remains comfortable despite the heat and humidity.


The secret is a combination of two things: excellent air sealing and wood fiber insulation.

An airtight home prevents warm, humid outdoor air from sneaking through cracks and gaps in the building envelope. But insulation also plays an important role in how a home feels. And after working with many different insulation products over the years, wood fiber has become one of my favorites.



Better Comfort in Every Season

Most people think of insulation as something that keeps a house warm in winter, but summer performance matters too.


Wood fiber insulation does an excellent job slowing heat movement through walls and roofs. Because it is denser than many conventional insulation products, it can absorb and store heat before it reaches the living space. This helps reduce temperature swings and can keep homes cooler during hot summer days.


In the winter, it provides the insulation value needed to reduce heating demand and improve energy efficiency. The result is a home that feels more comfortable year-round while using less energy.


Helps Manage Moisture Naturally

One of the biggest advantages of wood fiber insulation is how it handles moisture.

Unlike foam products that can trap moisture within wall assemblies, wood fiber is vapor-open. This means water vapor can move through the assembly and dry out rather than becoming trapped where it can lead to mold, rot, or other moisture problems.


Wood fiber also has the unique ability to absorb and release moisture as indoor humidity levels change. When the air inside becomes too humid, the insulation can temporarily absorb some of that moisture. When the air becomes drier, it releases it again.


This natural buffering effect helps moderate indoor humidity levels and contributes to a healthier, more comfortable indoor environment.


Fire Resistant Without Harsh Chemicals

At first glance, the idea of insulation made from wood may sound concerning from a fire safety perspective. Surprisingly, wood fiber insulation performs very well in fire testing.


Products such as TimberHP's batt and loose-fill insulation achieve high fire-resistance ratings using borate, a naturally occurring mineral. This provides fire protection without relying on the toxic flame retardants commonly found in other building products.

A Quieter Home

Wood fiber also has great acoustic performance, similar to mineral wool. Its dense, fibrous structure helps absorb sound, reducing noise transmission between rooms and from the outdoors. Whether it's traffic noise, barking dogs, or the sounds of everyday family life, wood fiber can help create a quieter and more peaceful home.


A Better Building Material

For me, wood fiber insulation checks all the boxes. It helps create homes that are comfortable, energy-efficient, quiet, and better able to manage moisture naturally. Combined with good air sealing, it can make a noticeable difference in how a home feels every day which is why it's become one of my favorite insulation choices.
